In Turing’s Cathedral, George Dyson focuses on the pioneering development of computing during the decade after World War II and essentially centers on one man- John von Neumann. At one level it is the story of how the world’s first stored-program computer was created. The work would break the distinction between numbers that mean things and numbers that do things—and our universe would never be the same.
The proliferation of both codes and machines was paralleled by two historic developments: the decoding of self-replicating sequences in biology and the invention of the hydrogen bomb. The narrative frames a meandering tour of the breakthroughs enabled by early computers, from hydrogen bombs to weather forecasting, and grandiose musings on the digital worldview of MANIAC’s creators, in which the author loosely connects the Internet, DNA, and the possibility of extraterrestrial invasion via interstellar radio signals.
The book is beautifully written and exhaustively researched with copious quotes from the main characters. Historian of technology, George Dyson does a commendable job of research and provide some interesting stories involving the birth and development of the digital age and the great minds behind it. If you are an engineer, scientist or in the computer field this book may be of interest but be forewarned it is a monotonous and an uninspiring read. I hope George Dyson’s book will kick off deeply felt and reasoned levels of meta-communication among all the cathedral architects and artisans.
