A dramatic shift is taking place in Israel and America. “Israel does not have a public relations problem; it has a policy problem. You can’t sell occupation in a postcolonial age.” In The Crisis of Zionism, Peter Beinart offers an elegant, deeply honest look at the failure of Jewish liberalism in forging Israel as a democratic state. And he offers a fascinating, groundbreaking portrait of the two leaders at the center of the crisis: Barack Obama and Benjamin Netanyahu.

What Netanyahu and major American Jewish organizations miss is that, in Beinart’s words, “the less democratic Zionism becomes in practice, the more people across the world will question the legitimacy of Zionism itself.” Peter Beinart makes a strong case for a vision of Zionism that encompasses ending the occupation of the West Bank and deepening Jewish education in America. He explains the roots of the current political and religious debates within Israel, raises the tough questions that can’t be avoided, and offers a new way forward to achieve Zionism’s founding ideals, both in Israel and among the diaspora Jews in the United States and elsewhere.

This is an elegant, deeply honest look at the failure of Jewish liberalism in forging Israel as a democratic state. Beinart concludes with provocative proposals for how the relationship between American Jews and Israel must change, and with an eloquent and moving appeal for American Jews to defend the dream of a democratic Jewish state before it is too late. He has written a brave and important book about Zionism today. Even if you disagree with him, Anyone who cares about the future of Israel should still read this book.

The Gods of Gotham is a story about Timothy Wilde who becomes a police officer in the NYPD in the 1840s. It takes place in 1845 and deals with the founding of the police department, and the beginning influx of Irish Catholics. Lyndsay Faye paints an accurate picture of this rough city and all its melting pot of ethnic and social groups. She puts the drive and passion of a modern thriller onto the mean streets of 1840s New York.

Timothy Wilde tends bar near the Exchange, fantasizing about the day he has enough money to win the girl of his dreams. After being injured and losing everything in the great fire of 1845, his brother a political insider gets him a job as a cop. Walking home one night, he meets a compelling and horrified ten year old girl, Bird, escaping what is a grim and distressing situation and who with her knowledge serves in assisting Timothy Wilde’s investigation surrounding a series of many deaths. Timothy isn’t sure whether to believe her or not, but, as the truth unfolds, the reluctant copper star finds himself engaged in a battle for justice that nearly costs him his brother, his romantic obsession, and his own life.

It’s richly written, speech authentic to the period, life described in gritty detail, characters almost larger than life, and excellently paced. The relationship between Timothy and his brother Valentine is a mystery to be solved as well. Faye does a great job of conveying the perils and potential of this great city at what feels like a key moment in its history, and throughout the story, we feel not only if the mystery needs solving but that the city it self may need saving from itself. Definitely one to read and I will be shoving it at all my friends.

Wild is the memoir of a 26-year old woman trying to cope with the loss of her mother and recent divorce, as she hiked 1100 miles alone on the Pacific Coast Trail. The book tracks Strayed’s personal journey on the PCT through California and Oregon, as she comes to terms with devastating loss and her unpredictable reactions to it; here she confronts snowstorms and rattlesnakes even as she confronts her personal pain.

Cheryl had a rough childhood and a rougher young adulthood losing her Mother to cancer at 45 when she was in her 20s. She embarked on reckless behavior that cost her a marriage to a man she apparently was in love with. Her story goes back and forth between relating her daily hiking experiences and recounting the previous 22 years of her life, which helps the reader understand why she seems to have made hurtful and even stupid choices in her past. She describes the people she meets along the trail in vivid detail, and depends on the kindness of strangers for car rides to trail crossings and for hot showers.

She captures the camaraderie of other hikers and personalities of the people she meets around in a genuine fashion, which makes them easy to imagine. Cheryl eventually came to the end of the hike and felt she had new insight into her behavior, her motivations and her place in the world. Her extraordinary story and writing is so poetic and vivid I laughed and cried and could not put the book down. I recommend this great read for anyone who loves backpacking, camping, or is consider getting into treks like the PCT.

How to Borrow eBooks from Kindle Owners’ Lending Library

March 15th, 2012

If your Prime membership hasn’t already paid for itself and then some with free two-day shipping and Instant Video streaming, this benefit is bound to tip the scales in your favor. If you read only one book at a time and only one book a month, as a de facto member of Amazon’s Kindle Owners’ Lending Library you might never need to buy a Kindle book at all. After all, you have access to thousands of books to borrow, including more than 100 current and previous New York Times bestsellers.

The catch (besides requiring Prime membership)? Borrowing books from the Lending Library works only from actual Kindle devices, like the Fire (but also including the original Kindle, Kindle Touch, and Kindle Keyboard), not with the Kindle app for various other devices (iPad, Android, etc.).

Because the Kindle store appears a little different between Kindle models (mainly because models other than the Fire don’t support the many media types of the Fire), the process varies slightly, depending on which Kindle you’re using. Here’s how to borrow a book from the Lending Library on the Fire:

  1. From the Books content library screen, press Store> to enter the Fire bookstore. From this screen, you can jump immediately to books available to borrow by tapping the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library link.
  2. When browsing books, either in the Lending Library subset or in the larger Store collection, you can tell if a book is available to borrow by looking for the Prime symbol (with $0.00 price) next to the title information.
  3. If the book is available to borrow, tap the book icon to bring up the product page and press “Borrow for Free” to download the book to your Fire.

Thought Revolution applies the science to help us learn to think differently. Encompassing twelve years of research, the book takes readers on an unexpected journey that will set them free-and it all begins with moving the pen from one hand to the other. It is the guidebook for all those who become paralyzed at hearing the word “creative,” and who think that only a few specially anointed people have access to their intuition.

Donius draws upon the work of Nobel Prize-winning Roger Sperry, M.D., who, in the mid-1950s, demonstrated the lateralization of brain functioning. The technique is called “intuitive” or “nondominant” hand writing and is the basis for this revolutionary approach to making lasting life changes. Donius offers the science behind nondominant hand writing and teaches readers ow to incorporate nondominant hand writing in their own lives. It’s really cool the things your brain can do, that you may not have known about. Thought-provoking, easy-to-do exercises and prompts help readers connect mnore fully with the needs of their subconcious right brains and unlock their hidden genius.

The book is an easy read, written in an engaging manner. It makes you think, for most of the time all that we ought to do is to think and implement through life for by so doing we are sure to find our pot of gold. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to better understand themselves in a true and authentic way!
